What is the Counseling Center?

The counseling center is a safe place where professional and expert methods are used to help children, families and individuals in solving everyday life problems and difficulties, in order to gain a clearer insight into the problems themselves and find quality foundations for solving them independently in the future.

In direct work, it represents a place where psychosocial support is provided, as well as group and individual counseling and psychotherapy work.

The basic principles on which the work of the Counseling Center is based are:

  • The principle of voluntariness - children, families or individuals use the Counseling Center service completely voluntarily and are free to voluntarily stop using the service;
  • The principle of trust - the entire work at the Counseling Center is based on the trust that is established between children, families and individuals with counselors who represent professional staff trained to work at the Counseling Center.
  • The principle of participation - children, families and individuals are given conditions in which they can express their opinion and that their opinion is taken into account in all matters and activities that directly concern them.

In the safe environment of the Counseling Center, children, families or individuals are provided with a range of services that facilitate coping with the psychological consequences they encounter, and that encourage the acquisition of new skills that they can apply in their daily lives, related to understanding and regulating emotions and stress, improvement of socio-emotional competences, parenting skills, etc. The aim of providing these services is preservation of mental health and functionality of individuals and families, and prevention of trauma, retraumatization and secondary traumatization in persons in a state of social need.

Furthermore, the Counseling Center uses an advisory, supportive and educational approach to overcome traumatic and/or highly stressful life experiences of children, families or individuals, as well as to empower them to become active subjects in creating the quality of their lives.

Who are the users of the Counseling Center?

The users of the Counseling Center's services are children, families or individuals (children and adults) whose lives have been significantly changed due to various adverse experiences, and they need psychosocial support, individual or group counseling and psychotherapy, namely:

  • children and young people whose lives are hindered by family circumstances
  • children who are users of day care services in the area of the city of Banja Luka
  • children and young people who are victims of all forms of violence
  • children and young people exposed to socially risky behavior
  • parents of children for whom the expert team of the Counseling Center deems it necessary to be involved in the counseling process
  • families or family members who need support within the scope of work and activities of the Counseling Center
